The Happy Humanist
"The Happy Humanist" is a simple book for ordinary people who want to find greater enjoyment and peace in their lives. Happiness depends on who we think we are.
We often get this wrong because it's difficult to know ourselves or other people. The self remains a mystery despite all the work by scientists and psychologists. That's why human relationships can be a problem. We have to appreciate that we may be asking for more than we're entitled to. Result? Strife and unhappiness.
Happiness requires genuine kindness, compassion and generosity toward others. We want to survive and prosper but naked self-interest only brings anxiety and conflict. We need to see this, and smooth our path with kindness.
Happiness is based on insight into the unpredictability of life. Everything is changing and uncertain - even the next moment. We cannot change this reality but we can develop tolerance of it just as we tolerate the wind and the rain. Acceptance and detachment have to become part of our nature.
Happiness lies in the direction of freedom, reason, ethics and justice. It is important that these concepts be related to happiness. A person who is oppressed cannot be happy.
Happiness is a personal attitude, distinct from momentary pleasures, and its most important element is to be satisfied that we are engaged in life in ways we regard as meaningful.
